top travel tips for your skin
It’s almost June. School is almost out, and summer vacation is about to begin. Whether you’re traveling by car or plane, one hour or fourteen hours, it’s important that we don’t let our skin care fall by the wayside. Here are my top tips for keeping your skin looking radiant and healthy while you travel.

1. Drink Your Damn Water
Obviously I should put this first because it is absolutely the most important. No matter where you’re going or how you’re getting there, staying hydrated on your trip is going to be the key to keeping your skin healthy. When traveling via plane, being at such a high altitude can cause dryness and lead to major dehydration. This dehydration can cause headaches, over active sebaceous glands, nausea, and so many more symptoms that are honestly just not fun. Bring a big water bottle with you to the airport, (make sure it’s empty for security) and fill it up before your flight.
2. Steer Clear of Alcohol
That 3rd glass of wine from the airport bar may seem like a good idea at the time but alcohol speed up the dehydration process while in the plane. Alcohol can lead to poor circulation, which can lead the skin to look dull and tired and can actually speed up the aging process.

3. BYOS (Bring Your Own Sheet Mask)
Individual sheet masks are great for both on the plane and after landing because they are TSA approved, easily disposable and most sheet masks don’t need to be rinsed off after you use them. I recommend getting a hydrating or calming mask. These will include ingredients like aloe and hyaluronic acid to protect your skin from dehydration. Simply apply the mask to a clean face and leave on for 10 minutes, then remove and press the remaining product into the skin.
4. Go Bare
In my opinion, travel is so much easier when I don’t have to care what I look like. I don’t know about you but I just want to put on my sweats, get as cozy as possible, and try and sleep the whole time. Try to avoid wearing heavy amounts of makeup while traveling. Not only is it easier but also it’s so much healthier for your skin! Our skin already suffers to breathe when we’re flying so covering our pores in thick foundation will only make things worse. Instead try sticking with a light moisturizer, which leads me to my next tip.
5. Sun Protection is STILL a Must
Even though we’re not physically outside, we can still be exposed to harmful UVA/UVB rays. This is especially the case if you’re in the window seat of an airplane. Be sure to wear an SPF of at least 15. A SPF moisturizer will work great!

6. Keep Your Routine Simple
It can be pretty difficult to stick to your normal routine while in mid-flight or at an airport. Try keeping your routine as easy as a simple cleanse, tone, and moisturize. If you can’t access water or a sink, a facial cleansing wipe will work fine for a temporary fix. (Beautycounter’s One Step Makeup Remover Wipes are great!) Witch hazel facial sprays are great for a toner that you can also use as a hydrating mist throughout the trip. Witch hazel will reduce any inflammation and keep you hydrated.
7. De-Stress
The stress of travel can wreak havoc on anyone’s skin. Too much stress can lead to breakouts or inflammation. Try to calm yourself down by using a lavender scented eye pillow or lavender essential oils. Just be careful not to use too much as to disturb your neighbor.
Travel can be a pain in the ass, don’t let it be a pain for your skin. These travel tips are easy things you can do while traveling to make sure your skin is happy and healthy.
